The fuel line allows fuel to be delivered from the fuel tank to the engine, and in modern applications, multiple fuel lines may be used to circulate unused fuel from the engine back to the fuel tank. As the fuel pump works to create pressure in the fuel tank, fuel is then transferred through the fuel line and arrives at the fuel rail to be utilized by the injectors. There may be sections of metal hard fuel line as well as rubber or nylon fuel lines that allow the fuel line to flex and be routed safely around other components. Crimped metal flanges are located at the point where hard lines meet flexible lines. These metal pieces are needed in most modern fuel injection systems to keep the lines from separating due to increased pressure as fuel travels throughout the system. Over time and with use, the fuel lines can begin to wear down or suffer damage from excessive pressure in the fuel system. In some cases, they can also rust, corrode, crack, or clog. A damaged or worn fuel line can cause vehicle performance issues and result in fuel system leaks, which can be dangerous. Driving with a damaged fuel line is unsafe, and repairs should be made as soon as possible. Common signs of a damaged or leaking fuel line can include engine misfire, stalling, strong fuel smells, and fuel leaks that may spray from the line while the engine is running or leak on the ground when the vehicle is parked. Inspecting the condition of your fuel lines can help you determine if they need to be replaced, and regular maintenance of the fuel filter, if applicable, can help keep them working as they should for as long as possible. If you need to replace your fuel lines, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries the replacement fuel lines, fuel hose, fuel filters, and more to get your vehicle back on the road.
