What is an Accelerator Cable?

An accelerator cable, or throttle cable, acts as a link between the gas pedal and the throttle plate. The throttle plate may be located inside the throttle body on newer applications or in the carburetor on older vehicles. When you step on your gas pedal, the throttle cable is pulled, opening the throttle plate to meter the appropriate amount of air to be mixed with fuel and sent to the engine. This allows the driver to control the engine's acceleration while maintaining an appropriate air and fuel mixture for efficient combustion and optimal power. Over time, the accelerator cable can weaken, stretch, or snap due to age, use, and general wear. Damage to the throttle cable can cause it to stick and delay accelerator response or may lead to problems with your cruise control. A throttle cable that has separated entirely may prevent you from controlling the speed of your engine, and it may be necessary to inspect the throttle body, accelerator cable, linkages, and more to determine the source of the problem. If you notice that your gas pedal is vibrating or sticking, or that the tension of the pedal has changed, it's possible that you need a new throttle cable. O'Reilly Auto Parts can help you find the best accelerator cable for your vehicle to restore performance and control for a complete repair.
