What is a Throttle Body?

The throttle body on your engine controls the air flow rate into the air intake or intake plenum. The butterfly valve on the throttle body is opened by the vehicle's throttle motor or via a cable connected to the accelerator pedal, which allows the appropriate amount of air into the engine when the vehicle is accelerating. Throttle bodies can become dirty, wear out, or suffer damage over time, and they may no longer operate as they should. If you're experiencing a lack of power, rough idle, stalling, poor accelerator response, or a Check Engine light, you may have a failing throttle body. Over time, the throttle body may also accumulate debris or carbon deposits that can disrupt the air flowing through the valve, or cause the valve to stick. Throttle body cleaner can often be used to clean the butterfly valve and the throttle body itself and return it to service. The throttle body or throttle position sensor may also fail electronically, sending incorrect signals to the vehicle's computer. This can cause poor fuel mixtures, misfires, or can trigger limp mode. If you need to repair or rebuild your throttle body, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts. We carry throttle body replacements, throttle body repair kits, and throttle body cleaner to help you make a complete throttle body repair.
