What is a High-Pressure Diesel Injection Oil Pump?

A high-pressure diesel injection oil pump, commonly known as a diesel injection pump, is a component used to pressurize and deliver diesel fuel to the engine's fuel injectors at high pressure. Fuel injected diesel engines normally operate at much higher fuel system pressures than gasoline engines. These higher pressures require many components of the system to be constructed differently in order to withstand and operate within these higher ranges effectively. For example, the fuel injectors on many of these high-pressure applications are hydraulically driven by a high pressure oil system. The high pressure diesel injection pump delivers diesel fuel to the fuel injectors, which when opened, allow fuel to be sprayed into the combustion chamber. The diesel injection pump may be driven by the timing chain or driven directly off of a sprocket on the engine to ensure consistent performance and power transmission. Over time, diesel injection pumps can become weak or fail. If you notice Check Engine light or rough idle, if you don't have adequate fuel pressure to start or run the engine, or if you notice fuel leaks or noise near the injection pump, it may be time to replace it. A failing injection pump can also cause sputtering, a loss or surge of power, and overheating, so ensure a complete diagnosis before beginning your repair.
