The fuel filter in your vehicle is a component of the fuel system responsible for filtering the fuel before it enters your engine. A fuel filter removes dirt, rust, sediment and other particles from your fuel before it is delivered to the engine. These particles and contaminants can cause wear and tear on your engine components, so the fuel filter acts as a protective screen to prevent premature engine wear. In some cases, your fuel filter may be combined with a fuel pressure regulator to ensure that the fuel does not exceed the operating pressure of the engine. If your fuel pressure is too high, this may cause your engine to run rich and result in unburned gasoline and black smoke from the exhaust. If your fuel pressure is too low, it can starve the vehicle of fuel. This may be caused by a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump, and can result in engine misfire, lack of engine power and acceleration, or trouble starting your vehicle. If you notice any of these symptoms, check the condition of your fuel filter and pressure regulator.
