What is an Exhaust Tail Pipe?

The exhaust tail pipe on your vehicle is the final section of pipe in your exhaust system and is used to release exhaust fumes to the outside air. Once the exhaust fumes have been passed through the exhaust system and are neutralized and quieted through your catalytic converter muffler, they are safely removed from the vehicle through the tailpipe. Some vehicles with performance exhaust systems may have what is called dual exhaust, meaning they will have two tailpipes. Exhaust systems can suffer from rust, damage from debris underneath the vehicle, and other environmental factors, and your exhaust's tailpipe may become damaged over time and no longer seal exhaust in the system. If you notice loud engine noises from under your car, a rattling or dragging noise under the vehicle, a loss of engine power, poor fuel economy, the smell of exhaust in the cabin, or an illuminated Check Engine light, inspect your exhaust system and tailpipe for any signs of damage. If your tail pipe is damaged, corroded, or missing, it's important to repair or replace it as soon as possible, as emissions and exhaust system leaks can be unsafe.
