What is a Catalytic Converter?

The catalytic converter is an emissions control device that is installed in the exhaust system of a vehicle. Catalytic converters utilize chemical reactions to change exhaust gasses produced by the engine into less harmful pollutants before they are released into the environment. Inside the catalytic converter is one or more ceramic honeycomb-like structures coated with various metals, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals act as catalysts which react with exhaust gasses to cause the chemical reactions that take place within the converter. When the exhaust gasses pass through the converter, they are exposed to the catalysts, and harmful pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, are neutralized and converted into less harmful substances, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. A catalytic converter is required by law if the vehicle was equipped with one from the factory, as it plays an important role in reducing vehicle emissions and improving air quality. Over time your catalytic converter honeycomb may clog, causing exhaust back pressure. This can cause sluggish acceleration, poor gas mileage, the smell of sulfur or rotten eggs from the exhaust, and might activate the Check Engine light. Damage may also cause the ceramic honeycomb to break loose, which can lead to exhaust rattling and excess emissions.
