Exhaust Pipe Adapters & Reducers

Your exhaust tailpipe releases exhaust from your engine near the rear of your vehicle to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide entering your cabin and to keep your engine running properly. Exhaust system adapters and exhaust reducers allow you to make exhaust repairs, including customizing your exhaust pipe sizes, without having to replace your entire exhaust system. When replacing your exhaust pipes or making repairs to a rusted or damaged exhaust section, having the correct adapters and reducers on hand can allow you to more safely and easily make a lasting repair.

Types and Functions of Adapters & Reducers

Exhaust adapters and reducers include straight connecting adapters, straight reducing adaptors, reducing bushings, inlet flange adapters, and exhaust elbows. Straight connecting adaptors and reducing adapters allow you to extend or replace sections of your exhaust pipe that may be different sizes, or connect exhaust pipe repair sections of the same size without having to service the entire section. Reducing bushings secures the smaller section of the exhaust pipe in place. Inlet flange adaptors connect sections of your tailpipe together, and exhaust elbows allow you to change the angle of the exhaust without bending at an exhaust shop. Since the exhaust may need to fit around other parts on the underside of your vehicle, a variety of exhaust elbows of several angles may be necessary. The correct installation of adapters and reducers will give you the ability to repair and restore your own exhaust system on your vehicle in many cases, but if the repair is too extensive, it may be necessary to visit a professional exhaust shop to have your exhaust system serviced or replaced.

Diagnosing Exhaust Issues

It is always a good idea to inspect exhaust issues as soon as you notice a problem. Leaks from the exhaust may not only cause ticking noises and poor performance but can also put you at risk of carbon monoxide leaks inside the vehicle. If you've noticed that your exhaust system is louder than usual, or if your exhaust is especially corroded or has rusted through, it should be repaired as soon as possible. Sometimes these issues can be the result of leaks near the exhaust manifold or at the exhaust flanges, which may require a simple gasket replacement to remedy.
