Symptoms of Damaged Exhaust Manifold Hardware
An exhaust manifold hardware kit is a set of fasteners used to secure the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head securely to prevent exhaust leaks. The exhaust manifold attaches to the cylinder head using studs or bolts to collect exhaust gasses from the engine's cylinders and route them into the exhaust system. An exhaust manifold gasket is also used between the manifold and the head to ensure that the exhaust system is sealed. Exhaust manifold bolts and studs are exposed to extreme heat any time the engine is running, which can cause them to seize in the cylinder head and strip any coatings from the hardware, allowing the bolts to rust. If an exhaust manifold stud or bolt is heavily corroded or seized it may be damaged or broken when you remove it. Threads that are worn or heads that have rounded off can also make it harder to replace and tighten the stud or bolt, and if this is the case, the exhaust manifold hardware should be replaced to prevent loosening and leaks. Signs of an exhaust leak include loud engine noises, diminished fuel economy, a loss of power, or the smell of exhaust near the engine or in the cabin. When installing a new exhaust manifold, or when reinstalling an existing one, it's often a good idea to use a new exhaust manifold hardware kit. An exhaust manifold kit includes new fasteners, springs, and more, where applicable, to properly and securely attach the exhaust manifold to an engine. This ensures that the manifold gasket is properly compressed and prevents the bolts from backing out over time, which can prevent issues like exhaust leaks or damage to the manifold.
