2012 Toyota Avalon - Valvetrain Parts
Replacement Valvetrain Parts
The valvetrain includes all of the components of your engine designed to open and close the intake and exhaust valves for proper compression and combustion. The two most common types of valvetrains are overhead cam and pushrod systems, and both of these systems require many of the same parts to operate as they should. No matter what type of engine you have in your vehicle, O'Reilly Auto Parts has your valve train parts needs covered for your next repair.
Valves and Valve Springs
The intake and exhaust valves open and close to allow the air-fuel mixture in and gasses from combustion out. Each cylinder has at least one intake and one exhaust valve, but many newer engines are equipped with two of each to improve performance and fuel efficiency. Valve springs provide resistance that returns open valves to the closed position when they are no longer engaged by the camshaft. Valve springs can be a single- or double-coil design depending on the performance level and design of the engine. If a valve is bent, it can prevent the valve opening from closing or fully sealing, which can cause performance issues and misfires. If a valve breaks, the head of the valve can also fall into the cylinder and cause damage to the piston. Broken valve springs can prevent the valve from completely closing, and that can also lead to engine performance issues. In some severe cases, a broken valve spring can allow the valve to hit the piston which can cause serious internal engine damage or catastrophic engine failure.
Pushrods and Lifters
Pushrods and lifters transfer the motion of the camshaft to the rocker arms to open and close the valves in pushrod-style engines. The pushrods sit on top of the lifters and help transfer oil to the heads for proper lubrication of the valvetrain. Lifters are available in three different designs, which include mechanical lifters, hydraulic valve lifters, and roller lifters. If a pushrod is bent, it may prevent a valve from opening correctly, and a worn or damaged lifter can cause damage and wear to the lobes of the camshaft. Broken or damaged pushrods and lifters can lead to extensive engine damage, so any pushrod, lifter, or valve train issues should be repaired as soon as possible.
Rocker Arms
Rocker arms are used in pushrod valve train engines to transfer the motion of the camshaft and pushrod to the valve. As the pushrod is pushed up, the rocker arm pivots to open the valve. If the rocker arms are broken or loose, the valves will not operate correctly, and you may notice a loud clicking or ticking noise coming from the valve cover, as well as reduced performance or a Check Engine light. While rocker arm tension can sometimes be set or adjusted to compensate for this, damaged or worn rocker arms will need to be replaced to ensure proper valve train operation.
