What is an Input Shaft Seal?

The manual transmission input shaft transfers power from the engine to the transmission when the clutch is engaged. The input shaft seal, or front transmission seal, prevents fluid leaks around the input shaft while still allowing it to engage and spin. For the transmission to run smoothly and prevent the damaging effects of metal-on-metal contact, it needs to remain properly lubricated with fluid. If your input shaft seal is worn, damaged, or loose, it can result in fluid leaks, and damage may occur to the input shaft seal due to low fluid levels, age, or long periods of inactivity that could cause the seal to tear. Low fluid levels due to leaks can cause damage to your transmission and result in overheating or excessive friction, and this can lead to more costly damage. If you notice transmission fluid leaking beneath your vehicle or between your transmission and engine, check your input shaft seal for damage or cracks.
