What is an Automatic Transmission Dipstick and Tube?

An automatic transmission (AT) tube and dipstick allow you to measure your vehicle's transmission fluid level. The tube houses the removable dipstick, which reaches into the pan of the transmission and allows you to determine the fluid level and condition. Some vehicles do not have a serviceable transmission, and in those cases, there will not be a tube or dipstick. Depending on the vehicle, it may also be recommended that you check the transmission fluid at operating temperature, or the dipstick may have a cold and hot level to allow it to be checked without the vehicle running. Transmission fluid keeps transmission parts lubricated and running smoothly, as well as acting as a hydraulic fluid to engage the transmission's gears. If you notice erratic shifts or difficulty shifting gears, you may have low or burned transmission fluid, which can be checked using the transmission dipstick. Transmission dipsticks can be bent or become corroded or otherwise damaged, and transmission dipstick tubes may crack, split, or leak, requiring these parts to be replaced.
