The automatic transmission control solenoid responds to signals from the vehicle's computer or transmission control module and is used to regulate the flow of transmission fluid through the transmission's valve body. This is essential for optimizing fluid pressure and allowing the transmission to shift under torque without slipping. Transmission fluid is the lubricant for the moving parts inside the transmission that helps protect the parts from wear, corrosion, and damage, and utilizes hydraulic pressure to allow for shifting and lockup for proper performance. Your transmission may have several solenoids that control the flow of transmission fluid, including one solenoid per gear which allows the fluid to be sent to the appropriate portion of the valve body while driving. Transmission solenoids can fail with time or due to contamination and may no longer react to the signals they receive, preventing fluid from being directed properly and limiting the transmission's ability to shift or engage. It is also possible for the control solenoid valve to become stuck open or closed, which can also cause issues with your vehicle's transmission performance. If you notice delayed shifts, sluggishness, an illuminated Check Engine light, or issues with shifting or getting your vehicle into gear, it may indicate a failure in one or more transmission control solenoids. If your vehicle requires transmission service, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for replacement automatic transmission solenoids, transmission fluid, and other related components for a complete repair.
