An automatic transmission includes internal clutches and bands that allow the transmission to be shifted through its gears. Transmission bands are steel plates that wrap around sections of the transmission gear train. The bands are activated by hydraulic cylinders inside the transmission case, which pressurizes the pistons inside the valve body. This pushes on the bands and locks them into the transmission housing. The transmission bands work with the transmission clutches to activate the different gears as you drive. When transmission bands wear or break, it can cause slipping in the transmission which can damage other internal parts. In some cases, the bands can be adjusted, but if they need to be replaced, this involves rebuilding the transmission.
