What is a Shift Interlock Solenoid?

A shift interlock solenoid, also called a shifter solenoid, is a safety component that keeps the automatic transmission from being shifted out of park until the brake pedal is depressed. Many vehicles also require the ignition to be in the "Run" position, which may be necessary if you have to place your vehicle in neutral to move it if it is not starting. The shift interlock solenoid works with the brake light switch and neutral safety switch to keep the vehicle from being started in gear, preventing damage or injury that could be caused by the vehicle lurching when placed in gear. If the shift interlock solenoid fails or works intermittently, it may make shifting difficult, or in some cases, the vehicle may not shift out of park at all. Most vehicles have a manual shifter release to temporarily fix this in instances where it is not possible to engage the interlock solenoid. This may also indicate a dead battery, so make sure to get your battery tested for free at O'Reilly Auto Parts before repairing or replacing the interlock solenoid. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement shift interlock solenoids for vehicles, as well as brake switches, neutral safety switches, and more to help you make your repair and get your car back on the road.
