What are Input Shaft Bearings?

The manual transmission input shaft is located on the front of the transmission that connects to the engine. The input shaft is used to transfer power from the engine to the transmission and then to the output shaft with gearing based on shift position. The input shaft bearing centers the input shaft and allows it to spin while keeping it steady and within appropriate tolerances. For the input shaft bearing to work properly, the bearing must be lubricated. Without proper lubrication, your input shaft bearing can experience premature wear due to excessive heat and friction. A failing input shaft bearing can allow the shaft to experience too much movement, which can impact gear alignment and the ability to shift or engage gears. Damage to these bearings can lead to a damaged input shaft, gears, and clutch, and if any failure symptoms are detected, should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent more costly or extensive repairs. If you notice clunking or grinding sounds while shifting gears, or your vehicle slips between gears, start by checking your transmission fluid level to ensure there is adequate lubrication. If it is full, your input and output shaft bearings should be inspected for signs of damage.
