2007 Toyota Tacoma - Transfer Case Output Shaft Bearing
What is a Transfer Case Output Shaft Bearing?
The transfer case output shaft bearing keeps the transfer case output shaft spinning freely while securing and centering it inside the transfer case. The transfer case is responsible for distributing power and torque from the transmission's output shaft to both the front and rear axles in four-wheel-drive (4WD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles. The transfer case bolts to the back of the transmission, and its input shaft is splined with the output of the transmission. The output shaft or shafts then connect to the driveshaft(s) to deliver power to the front and rear differentials. Over time, output shaft bearings may wear out from high stress, poor lubrication, or constant rotation, and this can lead to excessive friction and heat buildup. Signs of a failing output shaft bearing include unusual noises, such as grinding or whining, and vibrations from the transfer case. You may also notice that the connection point of the driveshaft and the transfer case seems noticeably loose due to a worn output shaft bearing. If you notice a grinding noise or fluid leaking from the transfer case or near either driveshaft, check your transfer case output bearings, seals, and driveshaft U-joints for signs of damage or wear. There will typically be one output shaft located in the front of the transfer case and one in the rear. When you need to service or repair your transfer case, O'Reilly Auto Parts offers complete replacement transfer cases, output shaft bearings and seals, transfer case fluid, and other drivetrain parts for most vehicles.
