What is a Transfer Case Motor?

A transfer case motor is a small, electric motor that moves parts inside the transfer case to engage different modes of the four-wheel drive (4WD) system, allowing for selection of two-wheel drive, high-gear four-wheel drive, low-gear four-wheel drive, and more. Over time, the transfer case motor can wear out, corrode, or be damaged by debris. This can prevent the motor from receiving the appropriate signals for shifting or may weaken the motor and keep it from actuating the transfer case appropriately.
