What is a Transfer Case Input Shaft Bearing?

The transfer case input shaft bearing holds and centers the input shaft and allows it to spin freely. The transfer case input shaft connects to the two output shafts of the transfer case to drive the differentials and axles at both ends of the vehicle. One output shaft is designed to power the front driveshaft, while the other transfers rotational energy to the rear. The input shaft receives power from the transmission and engine, then allocates the power to either the back wheels or all four wheels, depending on whether the four-wheel drive is activated. In order for the input shaft to spin properly, the bearing must remain lubricated. If you notice a grinding noise or difficulty shifting gears, be sure to check the transfer case bearings and transfer case fluid level. If the bearings are not lubricated correctly, they may suffer premature wear, crack, break, or become loose or shatter due to extreme heat and pressure. Damaged bearings can also allow debris to damage other parts of the transfer case, so this repair should be a priority to prevent more severe and costly damage.
