What is a Transmission Differential Bearing?

A transmission differential bearing, or transaxle differential bearing, surrounds the CV axle in front-wheel-drive vehicles, allowing movement and flexibility while the axle rotates. These bearings ensure that the CV axles can spin freely during vehicle operation, minimizing friction and centering the CV axle shaft to keep it tight to prevent wear or other damage. Over time, the transaxle bearing can wear out or sustain damage, which can lead to transmission noise, shaking when gears shift, or noise when accelerating from a complete stop. Some of these symptoms can also be related to a worn or damaged CV shaft or U-joint, so ensure a complete diagnosis is completed, including checking your transaxle and transmission differential bearing. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a variety of transaxle and transmission bearings, seals, CV axle shafts, and other parts for your vehicle to help you keep it running its best.
