What is a Timing Gear or Timing Sprocket?

The timing gears consist of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket connected by a timing belt or chain. The sprocket, or the timing gear, converts the linear motion of the timing chain to rotational motion that drives the gear. The crankshaft sprocket is timed appropriately to the camshaft sprocket(s) to ensure that the valve train operates in tandem with the crankshaft for appropriate compression and combustion. These timing components are essential to timing the opening and closing of the engine valves so that combustion can occur efficiently and at the appropriate moment for maximum power. Over time, the timing gears and sprockets can wear out or suffer damage. A damaged timing gear can cause the timing belt or chain to slip, resulting in engine misfire and allowing the engine to fall out of time. If you are experiencing rough idle or engine cranking without starting, an increase in fuel usage, overheating, or reduced power, you may need a timing gear or sprocket replacement. A failing timing gear or sprocket can also result in damage to the timing belt or chain, and should be repaired before further damage to the engine occurs. O'Reilly Auto Parts can help you find the right timing gear or sprocket, timing belt, timing chain, and other timing components for your vehicle so you can make a complete repair.
