Clogged Oil Pump Screen Symptoms

The oil pump pressurizes oil and circulates it throughout the engine to lubricate various components, including bearings, pistons, and the valve train. The primary function of the oil pump pick-up tube and screen is to filter any large particles of dirt or contaminants from the oil before it is sent through the oil filter for more thorough filtering. This helps keep the oil clean and protects critical engine components from being damaged by metal-on-metal contact or friction. The oil pump pick-up tube is located inside the engine's oil pan, extending into the bottom portion of the pan and positioned to reach the oil at any level to ensure a constant supply. Over time or due to internal engine wear or oil contamination, the oil pick-up tube can become clogged. If you notice noise from your engine or increased engine operating temperatures or pressure, check your oil for signs of contaminants. If there are large particles in your oil, then the oil pump pick-up tube could be clogged and may need to be cleaned or replaced. Signs that your oil pump screen should be replaced or cleaned include decreased engine performance, low oil pressure, metallic noises coming from the engine, or eventual engine failure. These can also be signs that the oil pump itself may be failing, so be sure to complete a full diagnosis while the oil pan is removed and replace all components that require it for a lasting repair.
