What is an Intake Manifold?
The intake manifold on your engine distributes the air-fuel mixture to the engine's cylinders for combustion, and is located between the throttle body, intake plenum, or carburetor and the cylinder head(s) of the engine. Intake manifolds are made up of a series of passages or runners that connect the intake ports of the cylinder head to a central plenum chamber or the carburetor. Various engine designs may incorporate other components with the intake manifold, such as an intake air temperature sensor, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, or fuel injectors in the case of fuel-injected engines. If the air and fuel mixture delivered by the intake is overly rich or lean, then the engine will likely experience problems such as a vacuum leak, misfiring, an illuminated Check Engine warning light, or decreased power. Intake manifolds can suffer damage over time or due to overheating and may begin to leak, which can cause performance issues due to constant changes in airflow and fuel concentration to the engine. If the intake manifold is failing, it may also leak coolant, which can cause an overheated engine, or worse, a blown head gasket. It is important to inspect the intake manifold and the manifold gaskets to determine the source of the problem, as your repair may be as simple as replacing the intake manifold gaskets. The design of the intake manifold can also have a significant impact on the engine's performance characteristics, including low-end torque, high-end power, and overall efficiency. To increase performance, aftermarket intake manifolds may also be available for some engines which allow for tuning and customization based on your application. For your next intake manifold repair, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement intake manifolds for many vehicles, as well as replacement manifold gaskets, fuel injectors and seals, and more for a complete installation and repair.
