What is a Harmonic Balancer Repair Sleeve?

A harmonic balancer repair sleeve is used to restore the seal and functionality of a worn or damaged harmonic balancer or vibration damper. The harmonic balancer shaft passes through the timing cover, which includes a rubber seal to protect the balancer shaft against oil leaks. Over time, this seal can harden and wear a ridge in the balancer shaft, allowing excessive clearance between the seal and the balancer and allowing oil to leak. If the harmonic balancer is in otherwise good condition, a harmonic balancer repair sleeve can be installed for a less expensive repair. The harmonic balancer sleeve press-fits to the balancer shaft and provides a new sealing surface for the timing cover seal, and is designed to address surface imperfections such as grooves, nicks, or wear on the sealing surface of the harmonic balancer. Harmonic balancer repair sleeves increase the size of the balancer shaft slightly, so it may also be necessary to use the appropriate crankshaft seal in the timing cover that is sized to the sleeve. This helps prevent oil leaks, maintain proper engine performance, and extend the life of the harmonic balancer. To remove and reinstall the harmonic balancer, you may need specialty tools like a harmonic balancer puller and installer, both of which are available at O'Reilly Auto Parts though our Loaner Tool program. We also carry new harmonic balancers, timing cover gasket sets, and harmonic balancer repair sleeves for most vehicles to help you complete your repair with confidence.
