Replacing a Water Pump Gasket

One of the most common signs of a failing water pump gasket is coolant leaking from around your water pump. The water pump builds pressure that circulates coolant throughout the engine, radiator, and the rest of the cooling system. Your water pump gasket seals your water pump to the engine block, timing cover, or other parts of the engine. Over time, or due to overheating or other cooling system problems, the water pump gasket can wear out and cause coolant leaks. Water pump gaskets may be rubber, silicone, or made of a paper gasket material depending on application, and it's important that both the surface of the water pump and the sealing surface be clean, smooth, and free of corrosion or pitting to ensure a complete seal. If you notice your engine overheating, or if there is coolant leaking from the front of your engine, check your water pump gasket and other cooling system components such as the radiator, water pump, and radiator hoses to determine the source of the leak. An engine with low coolant levels or overheating issues can cause serious engine damage if left unrepaired, and should be addressed as soon as possible. Any time the water pump is removed, the water pump gasket should also be replaced to ensure a lasting, leak-free repair. In some cases, RTV silicone or other cooling system sealants may also be required when installing your new water pump gasket, so be sure to check the installation procedures in your service manual before getting started. If you need replacement cooling system components, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for water pump gaskets, water pumps, and other temperature control parts for a complete repair.
