Your Ford Mustang's front crankshaft seal is located behind the harmonic balancer and is made to keep motor oil from leaking out of the front of the engine where the crankshaft leaves the block or timing cover. Crankshaft seals are often installed in the timing cover as well, and the timing cover may need to be removed to replace the seal. With age, the crankshaft seal can become hard and brittle, deteriorate, or tear, and you may see a leak coming from the end of the crankshaft or around the timing cover. Until you can make your repair, be sure to monitor the oil levels in your Mustang to prevent damage due to low levels of oil, and inspect the timing cover and crankshaft seals to locate the source of the leak. If your Ford Mustang needs a replacement crankshaft seal, timing cover seal, or rear main seal, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a variety of engine seals for your repairs so you can stop any oil leak.
