The camshaft is a rod that rotates in time with the crankshaft to time the combustion cycle appropriately. Along the camshaft are lobes that open and close the engine's intake or exhaust valves as the camshaft rotates in time with crankshaft. This allows air to enter the engine or exhaust to exit during the combustion cycle. Many modern vehicles use a dual overhead cam (DOHC) design with one camshaft for the intake valves and another for the exhaust valves.
