What is a Cam Plug?

The cam plug is a component used to seal the insertion point between the engine block and the camshaft, which is a shaft that rotates in time with the crankshaft to open and close the valves for combustion. The camshaft plug, similar to a freeze plug or expansion plug, is used to block oil passages and keep oil from leaking outside of the engine. It also prevents dust, dirt, and debris from entering the engine and contaminating the oil and internal engine components. If the camshaft plug or seal fails, there might be noticeable oil leaking from either end of your cylinder head or engine block. An oil leak in this area should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid engine damage or failure. O'Reilly Auto Parts offers a selection of cam plug replacements for most vehicles to help you make your repair and keep your engine running at its best.
