What is a Transmission Oil Pressure Switch?

A transmission oil pressure switch, or transmission oil pressure sensor, is an electrical component used to monitor the transmission fluid level and hydraulic pressure inside the transmission. This information is then relayed to the engine control module for various adjustments regarding shift points, torque converter operation, and other transmission functions. If the fluid level is low or the fluid isn't moving through the transmission properly, the transmission may stop functioning correctly. If the pressure switch fails or the fluid level and pressure is low, then it may also trigger a warning light, or hinder the transmission's ability to shift gears causing slippage or delayed shifting. This may also result in a Check Engine light, and your local O'Reilly Auto Parts can scan your Check Engine light for free to help you begin your diagnosis.
