An engine oil temperature sender, also known as an oil temperature sensor or oil temperature switch, is a device used to measure the temperature of the engine oil. It is typically located in the engine block, oil pan, or near the oil filter housing where it can come into contact with the circulating engine oil. The primary function of the engine oil temperature sender is to provide the engine control unit (ECU) or engine management system with real-time information about the oil temperature. This data is used to make adjustments to various engine parameters, such as fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and turbocharger boost levels. Over time, the oil temperature sensor electronics or wiring can wear out or corrode due to constant use and high-temperature exposure. In the case of a malfunction or failure of the oil temperature sender, the engine computer may not receive accurate oil temperature readings, resulting in decreased engine performance or potential engine damage. If you notice these symptoms, or if your Check Engine light is on, it is important to inspect and replace the oil temperature sender if necessary. For your next oil temperature sensor replacement, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts, where we carry new oil temperature sensors, motor oil, and more to help keep your vehicle running its best.
