Do I Need to Replace My Oil Drain Plug Gasket?

The oil drain plug gasket or drain plug crush washer comes equipped on some engine models and provides a seal between the oil drain plug and the oil pan. Oil drain plug gaskets and crush washers are designed to help prevent oil from leaking around the threads of the drain plug, and may need to be replaced every time the drain plug is removed for an oil change. They are typically made of a softer material such as aluminum, copper, or rubber. Check your vehicle's owners manual to determine if your engine uses a single-use gasket or washer that should be replaced with each oil change to maintain its effectiveness. When the oil drain plug is tightened, the crush washer or gasket compresses between the drain plug and oil pan, and using a new crush washer or gasket ensures a tight seal to protect against oil loss. If the drain plug gasket isn't replaced regularly, it can eventually become worn or damaged and may lead to an engine oil leak. If you notice oil leaking around your drain plug, you may need to remove the drain plug, drain the oil, and replace the plug gasket before you add new oil. For your next oil change, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement oil drain plug gaskets, crush washers, motor oil, oil filters, and other oil change supplies to help you keep your vehicle running its best.
