What is an Engine Oil Dipstick/Tube?

Your vehicle's engine oil dipstick and tube are important components designed to allow you to monitor and inspect your oil level and condition. The engine oil dipstick is a flexible metal rod that slides down the dipstick tube into the oil pan to measure the oil level. Located on the front or side of the engine, the engine oil dipstick may have a T- or oval-shaped handle with an image of a dripping oil can, and can be a variety of colors, like white, red, orange, yellow, and more. When it's time to check your oil, only check the fluid level with the engine turned off to prevent hot oil from leaking from the dipstick tube. You can also learn more in our How-To article for tips on how to check and change motor oil. Your engine oil dipstick may indicate the level of oil inside the engine with maximum and minimum markings or holes, and your owners manual may help you better understand the appropriate oil level for your vehicle. If you notice the markings of "Low", "Add", or "Full" on the dipstick are illegible, it may be time to replace your dipstick. The dipstick tube can also crack or split over time, which may allow dirt into the engine oil supply. When checking your oil, make sure to inspect the dipstick and tube for signs of damage as well, and replace or repair these parts as needed.
