What Is A Thermostat Gasket?

The thermostat gasket seals the thermostat housing to keep coolant from leaking around the housing. Thermostat or water outlet gaskets may be a flat, self-sealing gasket, a flat gasket that requires sealer, or even an O-ring, depending on the design of your cooling system. It's important to remember that any time the thermostat housing is removed for cooling system service or repair, the thermostat housing gasket should also be replaced to ensure a leak-free repair. Like all gaskets, thermostat gaskets can wear out over time or due to excessive heat and pressure, which can lead to coolant leaks, even while the engine isn't running. If you notice coolant leaking around the thermostat housing, low coolant levels, temperature fluctuations, or overheating, check your thermostat gasket for signs of damage. It may also be necessary to check other cooling system components such as the radiator, water pump, and hoses to determine the source of the coolant leak. Low coolant levels can cause overheating, and continuing to drive with an overheating engine may result in a blown head gasket, warped cylinder heads, or a cracked engine block. If you notice your vehicle leaking coolant or overheating, it is best to park your vehicle until a repair can be made to prevent more serious and costly damage that will need to be addressed. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, we carry thermostat gaskets, water outlet gaskets, thermostats, and other cooling system parts to keep your engine running at its best.
