2013 Ford Mustang - Thermostats
Thermostats
Thermostats regulate the temperature of the engine in your vehicle to keep it running at its optimal temperature. Thermostats are designed to open and close at specific temperatures. When the thermostat is closed, it allows coolant to circulate throughout the engine and heat up to an appropriate temperature. Once the coolant is warm enough, the thermostat opens and releases the hot coolant to the radiator for cooling before recirculation. If the thermostat in your vehicle fails, the engine could overheat and cause damage to the engine, or it may heat up more slowly than usual or never reach operating temperature.
Thermostats and Accessories
Thermostats act as a one-way valve for the coolant circulating through the cooling system of your vehicle, and other cooling system accessories help ensure the coolant stays in the cooling system without leaking or evaporating. Thermostat housings and gaskets help hold the thermostat in place and seal the system around the thermostat. Other accessories, such as radiator caps, radiator hoses, and coolant hose flange kits, seal the system and ensure that coolant can flow through the system without leaks.

If your cooling system is full, but your engine is overheating, your thermostat may have failed in the closed position. This can quickly cause head gasket or cylinder head damage or complete engine failure. A thermostat stuck in the open position may also prevent your engine from running at its optimal temperature, or could prevent your heater from working as it should.
