Your idler pulley helps with belt routing or angles and tensions the belt. It may be connected to the motor or a bracket. As opposed to belt tensioners, idler pulleys are not spring powered for adjustment. An idler pulley bearing keeps the idler pulley spinning smoothly. As with all bearings, if the idler pulley bearing fails, it will cause whining or grinding noises. You may also notice your belt squealing, and possibly damage to the pulley itself. When the bearing fails, it can cause the idler pulley to run off-axis, which can cause damage to the belt and pulley.
