What is a Wheel Bearing Retainer?

Wheel bearings allow the wheels on your vehicle to spin freely without binding. Many wheel bearings have a press-fit design, and once pressed into place, require a wheel bearing retainer ring, also known as a snap ring or circlip, to keep them seated. These bearing retainers help prevent the bearing from loosening or pushing itself out of the hub assembly or knuckle while you drive, and should always be installed during a wheel bearing replacement. Failure to replace the wheel bearing retainer can allow excessive movement of the bearing, and even though the bearing is pressed into place, it is still possible for it to loosen. This can cause wobbling at the wheel end and premature bearing failure. If you notice wheel bearing noise or the wheel moving or "walking" side-to-side while you drive, inspect the condition of the wheel bearing and check to make sure the wheel bearing retainer is still in place. If you're replacing a wheel bearing, or if your wheel bearing retainer is missing, damaged, or has failed, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts. We carry wheel bearings, hub assemblies, and wheel bearing retainer clips for most vehicles on the road today.
