2007 Toyota Tacoma - Universal Joint Components
Universal Joint Components
Vehicles equipped with four- and rear-wheel drive typically have universal joints that allow the driveshaft(s) or other parts to adjust pitch with the suspension when the vehicle is in motion or is driving on uneven terrain. This articulation allows the vehicle's driveshaft or axle rotation to remain consistent at a variety of angles without binding or damage. If you've noticed strange sounds coming from under your vehicle when you accelerate, shift, or come to a stop, you may have an issue with a universal joint or U-joint components.
U-Joint Parts and Accessories
Universal joint yokes attach to the drive shaft by the U-joint cross to allow the driveshaft to be connected to the transmission's output shaft or the pinion shaft. A damaged yoke could loosen and result in noise or damage to the transmission or driveshaft, requiring replacement to restore performance. U-bolts attach U-joints to universal joint yokes at each end, and include a U-shaped rod that is threaded on both ends, allowing them to fit over the universal joint caps. If you hear strange knocking or clunking noises when you go over bumps, you might want to check your U bolts to make sure they are securely in place. If you notice wear on the threads of your U bolts, it may be time to replace them. When replacing your U-joints, you will typically need to disassemble the entire U-joint connection for replacement. To ensure safe reassembly and the longest joint life, you will also often need to replace ball seats, U-bolts, and U-joint straps to complete your repair. When checking your U-joints for issues, looseness, or other signs of wear, it is always a good idea to note other components that may also need to be replaced soon, and address all of these repairs at the same time.
U-Joint Safety and Tools
