What is an Axle or Spindle Washer?

The spindle or axle washer evenly distributes the force of tightening the spindle nut and protects the nut and the bearing from damage. It's placed between the nut and the bearing and can help with hub assembly and bearing load. When servicing wheel bearings, it is important to install the spindle washer appropriately. It will often have a key and fit over the spindle shaft only one way. In most cases, your service manual will also specify the appropriate amount of preload, and will require you to torque the spindle nut over the spindle washer to specification. The spindle nut and washer may also be secured with a spindle nut retainer and/or cotter pin to prevent the nut from backing off while you drive. If you replace your wheel bearings and your spindle washer is missing or damaged, it should be replaced before you complete the repair. The washer is imperative to the assembly of the wheel end, and is there to shield the bearing from the points on the axle nut, as the edges of the nut can cause damage to your new wheel bearings if they are in direct contact. For your next wheel bearing or hub repair, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for replacement wheel bearings, wheel seals, wheel bearing grease, axle nuts, nut retainers, and spindle washers for a complete repair.
