The CV shaft on a front-wheel drive car like your Ford Focus transfers power from the transaxle to the hubs. The CV shaft has CV joints on both ends that allow it to rotate without binding as the suspension angle changes. The Cv joints are covered by a rubber boot that is designed to keep grease inside and dirt out to extend the life of the joints. The CV joints on the CV half shaft are subject to wear and tear over time, or if the grease boot is damaged. If you see dark grease on the inside of the wheel of your Focus, the CV axle boot or the joints may be worn out. Other signs that the CV shaft may be failing on your Ford Focus include a clicking or popping sound when turning or on acceleration, and you may feel a side-to-side shaking from the front of the car.
