What is an Axle Spindle Seal?

The spindle attaches the wheel hubs of a non-driven wheel to the knuckle and allows them to rotate with the help of the wheel bearings. A spindle provides a seat for the spindle or wheel bearings, which prevent the hub and spindle from making direct contact and reduces friction and wear. On the outside of the wheel hub is a cap on one side and an axle spindle seal on the other to keep grease inside the hub. The axle spindle seal keeps your bearings lubricated and prevents grease from leaking from the hub, which ensures your axle spindle and bearings are properly lubricated. Over time and with use, your axle spindle seal and bearings can experience wear, and this can allow grease to leak from the hub and accelerate bearing damage. If you notice squeaky bearings or grease around the rear of your hub or tires, check your spindle seal for signs of damage or leaks. If the seal has been damaged, the seal and grease should be replaced, as low grease levels, moisture, or contamination can ruin your bearings and can result in damage to the spindle and hub if not addressed promptly. If you need replacement seals, bearings, grease, or other axle or wheel end parts, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts to find the right parts for your repair.
