Axle Shaft U-Joints

The universal joints, also known as U-joints, are used to transmit torque from the drivetrain to the wheels so that they can be driven at a consistent speed while still permitting movement in the vehicle's suspension. This allows the driveshaft or axle shaft to change angles as the vehicle goes over bumps or uneven road surfaces. U-joints are found in most all-wheel, four-wheel, and rear-wheel drive vehicles. Axle shaft U-joints are installed between the axle shaft and hub in applications that include a solid front differential, as it is necessary for the front wheels to be able to turn without interrupting power delivery from the axle and differential. Axle shaft U-joints are greased from the factory, and may or may not feature a zerk fitting to allow them to be maintained by forcing new grease into the needle bearings. This can help maintain the axle shaft U-joints and keep them working their best for as long as possible, but if the grease is contaminated or leaks from the joint, damage can occur. When the U-joints start to wear out, you may notice clunking when turning the front wheels due to binding in the joint. Other signs of failure include vibrations felt under your seat or at the front of the vehicle, a rhythmic clicking or squeaking sound that increases with speed, or shaking in the steering wheel. Ignoring these U-joint failure symptoms could lead to separation. Most new vehicle U-joints are greased from the factory and are not serviceable. However, aftermarket U-joints often feature grease fittings for service. Adding new grease lubricates the needle bearings and pushes contaminants out.
