CV, Driveshaft, & Axle

Driveshafts and axles transfer the rotational movement from the transmission, transaxle, or transfer case to the tires and wheels to keep your vehicle moving. U-joints connect the drive or prop shafts and deliver vibration-free operation, even when the driveshaft spins at various angles. Excess vibrations or clicking noises during acceleration, deceleration, or when driving at speed may point to a failing CV shaft or U-joint, and these problems should be inspected and addressed promptly to prevent a breakdown or damage.

Front- or Rear-Wheel Drive

Front-wheel drive vehicles normally use CV shafts that connect the transaxle to hub assemblies on the front wheels. Driveshafts and solid axles are normally used on rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles. Driveshafts and CV shafts are usually designed with U-joints that allow them to rotate without binding, even at steep angles as the suspension geometry and terrain changes. Depending on their length, driveshafts and CV shafts may also be equipped with a carrier bearing to provide support and relieve some stress on the shaft. Rear-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles may also use solid axles mounted in the rear end differential housing that are supported and installed using axle bearings and wheel seals.
