Engine Cooling Fan Motor Replacement

The engine cooling fan motor is an electric motor that powers the engine cooling fan in a vehicle's cooling system. Cooling fans are typically activated by a temperature sensor or a control module that monitors the engine temperature. When it is determined the fan should be turned on, a relay sends power to the fan motor, and then turns it off when the temperature returns to an appropriate level. When it is running, the engine cooling fan draws air through the radiator, which helps to dissipate the heat generated by the engine and lower the engine coolant temperature. The cooling fan may also be responsible for drawing air through the A/C condenser or transmission cooler to keep these systems operating appropriately. A failing cooling fan motor can cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to engine damage or failure if not repaired. Overheating is the biggest sign of cooling system problems, and if the cooling fan is not operating when the engine is overheating, it may indicate a failing fan motor, relay, or coolant temperature sensor. Electrical issues with a fuse, relay, or cooling fan connector may also be to blame, so ensure a complete diagnosis before replacing your cooling fan or cooling fan motor. If you're repairing your cooling system, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts, where we carry replacement cooling fan motors, fans, coolant temperature sensors, and cooling system components for a complete repair.
