The intermediate steering shaft connects the steering column to your steering gearbox or steering rack and pinion assembly, and is essential for operating both manual and power-assisted steering systems. A steering shaft often includes two universal joints to connect the steering column to the steering gear input, which allow for flexibility and movement. The steering shaft is typically a long steel rod that connects the steering U-joints and transfers the motion of the steering wheel to turn the wheels. The steering shaft allows the driver to turn the vehicle and control the steering wheel smoothly and efficiently. Without a properly functioning steering shaft, controlling the car can be difficult and dangerous and limit the driver's ability to turn smoothly and navigate sharp corners. A damaged steering shaft or U-joints can also cause uneven wear on your tires. Eventually, the U-joints can wear out, and this may cause a variety of steering symptoms. Popping or clunking when turning that gradually gets worse is a sign of worn steering U-joints or other suspension components. Binding in the steering wheel can also be caused by U-joints that aren't moving freely. In some cases, your wheel may not return to center when you finish turning, or your tilt steering may not work as it should. If you experience any of these symptoms, inspect your steering system, including the steering intermediate shaft, for signs of damage or wear. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, we carry the intermediate shaft you need for your vehicle. We also offer steering column repair parts and suspension parts to keep your car on the road.
