2005 Nissan Altima - Steering Shaft Universal Joint
Most vehicles are equipped with a tilt steering column to allow the driver to adjust their steering wheel for comfort. When the steering wheel is tilted, it changes the angle of the steering shaft. Because the steering gearbox or rack and pinion doesn't change angles, a U-joint is required to keep your steering from binding. The steering shaft U-joint allows the steering shaft to spin at a different angle than the intermediate steering shaft. These U-joints may also use clevises or yokes to attach to the intermediate shaft and steering shaft. When the U-joint wears out, you may notice your steering wheel clunking or binding when you turn. If you need a new steering shaft U-joint, or other steering column parts, check out the selection at O'Reilly Auto Parts.
