What is a Steering Pump Seal Kit?

Your power steering pump creates pressure to help you turn your wheels more easily, and sends this pressure to the rack and pinion unit or steering gear box using power steering hoses. Power steering pumps are equipped with seals to prevent pressurized fluid leaks during operation and ensure that the fluid level is maintained. Over time, these power steering pump seals can become brittle, tear, wear out, and fail, allowing fluid to leak from the pump. This can cause the power steering pump to overheat, make noise, and may make steering your vehicle more difficult. If you notice whining noises when you turn the steering wheel, check the level and condition of your power steering fluid. If the fluid level is low, it's likely due to a leak, and you may also notice reddish-brown fluid in your driveway or garage floor. Inspecting the system, including the pump, gear box or steering rack, and the power steering hoses can help you determine where it is leaking. If the leak seems to be coming from the body of the power steering pump, replacing the seals may allow you to successfully rebuild the pump and return it to operation. A steering pump gear seal kit includes all of the seals you need to rebuild your power steering pump, and O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a variety of power steering seal kits for select vehicles to help you keep your vehicle turning easily.
