What is an Idler Arm?

An idler arm is a component of a vehicle's steering system that helps to support the steering linkage and maintain proper alignment of the front wheels. Idler arms are usually installed on the passenger side of the vehicle and attached to the frame with a bracket. The idler arm is designed with a pivoting joint that connects the center link or drag link to the frame of the vehicle for stability and support. The idler arm joint is typically greased and allows the idler arm to turn with the movement of the steering, and also helps to absorb any shocks or vibrations that may cause the steering to jerk or pull. The idler arm is also responsible for maintaining proper tension on the steering system, and helps maintain alignment to keep the vehicle driving straight and tires wearing evenly. Over time, the idler arm may become worn or damaged, which can cause steering problems such as looseness or steering wheel vibrations. If there is a lot of play or weak response in the steering wheel, or if the vehicle wanders or drifts back and forth on its own, then the idler arm may require replacement. Inspecting the condition of your idler arm, steering gear box, tie rods or drag links, and other parts of your steering and suspension system can help you determine the source of the problem before beginning your repair. O'Reilly Auto Parts offers a selection of idler arms and steering system parts to help you complete your steering system repair and keep your vehicle under control.
