Your power steering pump is often made up of a reservoir, the pump itself, and a pulley to drive it. The pulley attaches to the pump via a shaft that enters the power steering pump case. Because the case is filled with fluid, a seal is installed around the pump shaft to keep power steering fluid from leaking. With age, this seal can wear down and cause power steering leaks. If you notice leaking around your power steering pump but can't pinpoint the location, it may be coming from behind the pulley at the shaft seal. Leaking power steering fluid can cause whining noises or difficulty when turning the steering wheel.
