What Is A Power Steering Pump?

The power steering pump is driven by the engine belt to pressurize fluid for power-assisted steering. It is usually connected to the rack and pinion or steering gearbox that receives the pressure and allows you to easily turn your steering wheel. Power steering pumps may include a built-in reservoir or have a separate remote reservoir that should be checked frequently to ensure the fluid levels and conditions are appropriate for safe operation. Low power steering fluid levels can cause squealing noises when turning, and may also cause the power steering pump to wear out more quickly. If the power steering pump is damaged or worn out, you may notice squealing or stiff steering, and you may notice even more intense noise when turning the vehicle hard in either direction. A damaged power steering pump may also leak, and you might notice puddles of power steering fluid beneath the vehicle or low fluid levels.
