What is a Leaf Spring?

A leaf spring is a suspension component made up of one or more thick bands of steel, called leaves. Several of these leaves can be bolted together to form a single, curved piece. Leaf springs are common in suspension systems that frequently carry extra weight, like trucks, SUVs, trailers, and vans, helping to absorb road shock and control ride height while keeping tires aligned on the road. When the vehicle hits a bump, the leaves flatten and then recoil to their typical curved shape, working with the shock absorbers to prevent the vehicle from bouncing and maintaining comfort while driving. Over time, leaf springs can wear out, sag, crack, or break, which can lead to vehicle sag and a much rougher ride. Leaf spring shackles, which connect the leaf springs to the frame, can also suffer damage that can lead to a rough ride, so ensure that you inspect the leaf springs and shackles before completing your repair. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement leaf springs, shackles, bushings, and more for most trucks, SUVs, and vans to help you keep your vehicle driving at its best.
